Ugly Unicorns

Oil on Canvas, 2021
100 × 120 cm - 39 × 47 in

“Ugly Unicorns” relives the story of unicorns that dates back to the Renaissance. In those days, it was believed that unicorns attacked boats, but as the story spread to other continents, they were then imagined as horses with a single horn. The painting features two narwhals in the foreground, a mother and her baby, against the breathtaking pink in the deep blue Arctic Ocean.

The artwork is JC's visualization of his belief, that while magic may not always be as beautiful as we imagine, it still exists. The title “Ugly Unicorns” invites us to rethink our preconceptions about beauty, and to appreciate the magic that exists in the world around us, even amid chaos and uncertainty.
